Pranab Mukherjee on inaugurating the diamond jubilee celebrations and the 26th convocation of the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, in Ranchi, emphasized the need to arrest the declining standards of education in the country and sought quality improvement by engaging the focused attention of academicians, policymakers, and other stakeholders to this end. Indian education system has several flaws as Pranab Mukherjee pointed the reason for this is the base on which it is built. The infrastructure for education needs to be improved.
India has a good number of primary and secondary schools (though not sufficient). In view of the raising cost of education, what the government should aim at is not only using the increased allotted fund for education to provide higher wages to the teaching stuff but also distribute it properly to create infrastructure so that the gap between government and private schools are reduced. It would restore the faith of common people in government schools. Pranab Mukherjee emphasized on these points.
He also stated,” Multiple interventions are necessary. Attracting quality faculty and continuous faculty development is one. Adjunct faculty from the industry and research institutions if hired can provide a practical orientation to course modules”. Teachers should be properly trained so that they can be equipped with changing teaching methodology. “Through the establishment of research parks, cutting- edge research can be pursued and that will help develop a world class ecosystem in our institutions,” Mukherjee said.
