The Jadavpur University Department of English has been from the very beginning one of the most prestigious and active departments of the university. Seminars both departmental, national or international has been organised at regular intervals to provide a platform for young research scholars and motivated students to cultivate and share knowledge, creating an environment where students can think outside their prescribed syllabus.
Going hand in hand with the academic pursuits are the Departments effort to promote various kinds of sports along with professors who participate with the students. Corridor cricket matches are held every semester making the student teacher bond even stronger. 17th March will held one such match again where the entire Department will witness the epic corridor cricket of the Department.
This month is lined with two major seminars, the Debabrata Mukherjee Departmental seminar on 25th March and the other delivered by Kathleen James Chakraborty, professor of art history at University College Dublin from 21st to 25th March. The Debabrata Mukherjee is an annual seminar and this year it will focus on adaptations from literature in English to Indian cinema.

Ten paper presenters will deliver their research work on the topic in the above mentioned date. The later presentation by Kathleen Chakraborty will be based on Anglo-Irish literature, the ties between the Irish and Indian independence movement along with research work on Mughal and Rajput paintings in the Chester Beatty Library which have greatly interested Indian scholars of late. Over all this month the Department of English, Jadavpur University has great plans lined making an interesting mix of academic and fun activities to keep the students engaged. The seminars are open events and all the requested to come if time permits to participate and witness research work by budding scholars.
