The choice for the new VC of Jadavpur University, Kolkata has been a part of recent discussions. After the movement Hokkolorob, leading to the removal of Abhijit Chakraborty the university has functioned without an acting Vice Chancellor. Recent news confirms that Suranjan Das is to take over this position.
However, Saranjan Das is presently the Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University as well. Thus, the electing of same VC for two autonomous institutions have created massive discontent. Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi also the JU Chancellor, signed in favour of this decision previously this week.
The search panel chooses Suranjan Das over Swapan Bhattacharyya, director of National Institute of Technology among others as his administrative capabilities in one of the state’s prestigious educational institutes has already run the test of time. Thus, the search panel finally voted his name for the post.
However, it leads to certain obvious questions regarding compromising of the autonomous status of the institution. Different autonomous institutions are bound to have different characters of their own, their own educational system and their very own environment for teaching. Would this lead to a homogenization? Would it work for the institution? As of now the answers are yet to be found.
