Scholarships for girl child have been initiated by Human Resource Development to improve the situation of female child education in India and to prevent their drop out from schools and colleges. Education for a female child has faced various obstructions in a patriarchal country like India where they are primarily deemed useful for performing domestic chores. There has been a long history of struggle to initiate girls to education and this process could be better supported if the government provides more initiative financially.
Currently, scholarships are mainly provided to small families with a single female child. Starting from fee waiver from class 6 to 12 and provision of grants in the post-graduate level are made available. But this provision is educational board specific and most of the female students in need of financial support for education are exempted from it due to the single child bar. There is a provision of other scholarships too, but they are not specifically meant for girl child who is in most need of monetary support as education is increasingly becoming more expensive.
An emphasis on providing more scholarship for female child is important as till now in various parts, primarily of rural India girls are forced to leave their education after class eight or due to family pressure or lack of financial provision and are left to fend for their own if they opt for higher studies. They are usually married off without a proper education to support themselves in future. We always have to remember that if a girl is provided adequate education in a family the whole family benefits from it and the future generations see a better prospect for their own careers. So what is required at this stage is a little more of support for a better tomorrow.
